Emails sent to a poet group

4/24/04
I'm primarily an artist and I have no real interest in pursuing money-making with my poetry.

I'm gratified that I've been able to make some money from my art, with sales of over 300 paintings. However ,even that wouldn't have supported me by itself. Fortunately, I've been able to make money as a writer (technical) and commerical artist (graphic design).

Frankly, I have two justifications for not pursuing the path of full time "fine artist."
1. I don't like starving in garrets.
2. I think the path to total freedom is extraordinarily worth pursuing and the way costs money. It therefore becomes expedient to make the money necessary to stay on the road.

I call this pragmatic.
But I see too many poets and artists who sacrifice eternity for their art. I can't agree that that's a good solution.

Here's my take on it:
You think that you have to survive as an artist.
I know that this world is set up to reward downstats -- not artists.

By all means, rehabilitate your artability. But please don't sacrifice eternity in search of recognition by wogdom. It's not worth it.

(Hope I haven't offended. I feel strongly about this.)

True art always elicits a contribution from those who view or hear or experience it.
