Message in a bottle
oil on canvas
Now, I bet you already think you know what this is about, if you read
the title. But it's not really. I arrived late for a figurative painting
makeup calss (due to ugly weather on the beltway) and the instructor had
already gone, takingthe students over to his studio. I was pissed, since
I didn't want my hour's ride to be for nothing. So I gathered up a plastic
skull, a Heinken bottle and a piece of red cloth from the assorted paraphernalia
in the course room and painted this small still life. What I particularly
like about it are the skull's grin (of course) and the reciprocal hints
of reflection between the skull and the bottle.
