Painting on white versus tinted ground

Since the days of the Impressionists, a great many artists have been painting on a white toned canvas. This is not that only alternative. And, in fact, in some cases, the use of a pre-tinted canvas can significantly affect the painting. For instance, when painting a landscape, rich in greens, it might be interesting to prepare the ground with a red on earth red tint, to play off the greens. Sometimes painting light strokes on a dark tinted ground gives the painted area depth and variety.
